Log multiplexing in Tutum

We’re introducing a new feature in Tutum called log multiplexing, which will show the logs of all of the containers by time sequence.

Tutum manages docker containers using “Applications.” Applications represent a set of containers running on the same docker image/repository. Log multiplexing joins a list of other features that help users better control and manage their containers such as: scaling, redeploy, auto-destroy, crash-recovery, etc. A full list of features can be found here: http://docs.tutum.co/features/

In previous versions, Tutum would show the logs of an Application’s containers, using the following format:

======> container_name_1 <======
[timestamp] log content line 1
[timestamp] log content line 2
======> container_name_2 <======
[timestamp] log content line 1
[timestamp] log content line 2

However, when errors occur, this format isn’t convenient for users to look through. Users have to scroll up and down to view the logs of the various containers.

In order to solve this problem, we’ve introduced log multiplexing in the latest version of Tutum. This will show the logs of all the containers by timestamp. The new format is shown below

[container_name] [timestamp] log content line 1
[container_name] [timestamp] log content line 2
[container_name] [timestamp] log content line 3

With our new log multiplexing, users can easily find out what happened at a certain time and which containers are affected.

If you want to show a log of a single container, you can simply use the following commands:

tutum app logs <app_name/app_id> | grep -F "[<container_name>]"


tutum container logs <container_name/container_id>

Next time you need to go through your application’s logs, use log multiplexing a try. It should save you time, and provide a better user experience. We’re always striving to create features and functionality that make our user’s lives easier.
